The Nilgiris : The extent of destruction caused by the massive rains and flash floods in the Nilgiris district and nearby regions was submitted on Friday by MP A. Raja, after he assessed the entire stretch by visiting the affected regions for the past five days.

According to his report, more than 1000 families are left homeless and lost their property and livelihood in the devastation. The first weekend of August was a nightmare for the Nilgiris district after torrential rain wreaked havoc across the district.
"Around 520 areas experienced landslides and flash floods, out of which 40 places encountered massive landslides which washed away over 1000 houses, 3000 acres of farmlands and other infrastructure including electric poles and water pipelines. Over 2000 houses were reported to have flooded in Gudalur and Pandalur areas", noted MP Raja in his report.
He has strongly urged that the State government should provide adequate compensation for the people in a timely manner.
He also cited that DMK Leader MK Stalin's two-day visit to the district to inspect the relief works and alloted Rs. 10 crore from the MLA and MP fund.
The Nilgiris MP also visited villages in Gudalur, Pandalur, Oveli, Naduvattam, Ithalar, Emerald and inquired to the people accomodated in relief camps on distribution of relief materials.
Following the five-day inspection, MP A. Raja handed over a comprehensive review report to the District Collector, J. Innocent Divya on Friday and stressed to expedite the relief works.
"Due to massive landslides, over 1000 houses are destructed in Oveli village. The locals there allege that the forest officials are blocking them from taking construction materials for repair works. The forest department have to be liberal in allowing people take the materials and help them in revamping their lives", the MP noted in his report.
He also requested to expedite the process of searching the body of Sainudeen who was washed away in the raging waters. "The compensation amount of Rs.10 lakhs has not reached the family, citing his missing body. Hence, the searching process should be expedited", he noted.
